According to recent industry updates released by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has officially published the new EN 16128:2025 nickel release standard, which applies to both spectacle frames and sunglasses sold within the European market.
The updated regulation places greater emphasis on nickel release limits and product safety compliance, particularly for eyewear products that come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin. Manufacturers and exporters supplying sunglasses and optical frames to Europe are expected to strengthen material selection, surface treatment processes, and laboratory testing procedures to ensure products meet the latest EU compliance requirements.

Industry experts note that the introduction of the EN 16128:2025 standard reflects the European market's increasing focus on consumer safety, product quality, and sustainable manufacturing practices. For eyewear companies engaged in OEM/ODM production and international exports, compliance management is becoming an increasingly important factor in maintaining market competitiveness and long-term business growth.
As global regulations continue to evolve, eyewear manufacturers are accelerating investments in safer raw materials, advanced coating technologies, and stricter quality control systems to meet international certification standards and improve export reliability across Europe and other key overseas markets.
