On July 9, industry media reported that Thunderbird Innovation announced a bold new product at its 2026 summer launch event - the Thunderbird iO. This AI glasses model has no camera at all but supports monochrome green display. After halting new AI feature development on the Thunderbird V4, CEO Li Hongwei made a decision that sounded like "self-destruction" - the Thunderbird iO is not an AI camera glasses like the V4, but a display-only AI glasses that completely abandons photography functionality.

Camera-free display-only AI glasses are not without precedent. Even Realities, the Chinese startup that just announced a $150 million Series Pre-B funding round with a valuation exceeding $1 billion, has equipped both its G1 and G2 AI glasses generations with display-only functionality and no camera. The launch of Thunderbird iO marks the official entry of this industry leader - which holds 27% of the global AR glasses market and has ranked first in China for four consecutive years - into the camera-free AI glasses competition.

Industry insiders note that the Thunderbird iO launch reflects an important emerging branch in the AI glasses industry - between photography functionality and privacy security, some manufacturers are choosing the latter. As privacy controversies surrounding smart glasses continue to escalate, camera-free design is becoming a key direction for differentiation. Thunderbird's bold product choice is both a response to market trends and a strategic supplement to its own product portfolio.
